The 81st United Nations General Assembly has officially opened at UN Headquarters in New York, bringing the world’s nations together for a new year of diplomacy, international cooperation and debate.

The session opened on 8 September 2026 and is presided over by H.E. Dr. Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh, President of the 81st General Assembly. The theme for the session is “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”

The upcoming General Debate is scheduled for 22–26 September and 28 September 2026, with world leaders expected to address major international issues and global challenges.

Key issues during the 81st session include peace and security, climate action, sustainable development, sea-level rise, pandemic preparedness, global cooperation and international governance.
