Aliko Dangote has officially broken ground on a massive $16 BILLION oil refinery project in Lamu, Kenya — marking another major expansion of his African industrial ambitions. 🇳🇬🇰🇪🔥

The new Dangote East African Refinery is planned to process approximately 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day and is expected to become one of the largest industrial projects on Africa’s east coast. Construction officially began in Lamu on September 30, 2026.

The project is designed to include a 1,000-megawatt power plant and is expected to supply petroleum products including petrol, diesel and jet fuel to Kenya and other markets across East Africa.

Dangote has said the refinery is expected to be completed in roughly 40 months, while regional governments have been offered the opportunity to take up to a 30% combined stake in the project. Kenya has been allocated an initial 10% stake.

The project is expected to serve a major regional market that currently depends heavily on imported refined petroleum products. Supporters see the refinery as an important investment in regional refining capacity, while environmental and land-rights concerns have also been raised around the Lamu site.

Watch this video for the latest details on Dangote’s $16 billion Kenya refinery, its expected capacity, the Lamu project, the potential impact on East Africa, and what it could mean for Kenya’s energy and industrial future.
