New Orleans will be seeing another television news network in its channel lineup soon.
The Black News Channel, an independent, minority-owned 24/7 network, will be available in November. Chairman C.J. Watts made that announcement Wednesday in the Jefferson Parish Council Chambers. Watts is a former Oklahoma Congressman, athlete and cable news veteran. He talked about the importance of diversity in cable news programming.
“There’s more to the African American community that what we see in mainstream media,” said Watts. “There are doctors and lawyers, engineers. There’s a whole host of things and America only gets a small snippet.”
BNC will launch in November to an estimated 33 million cable TV and satellite households in top TV markets including New Orleans, New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta.
Former news director Gary C. Wordlaw has been named the VP of news and programming.
The press conference was hosted by Jefferson Parish Councilman Mark Spears, Rep. Rodney Lyons, School Board Members Simeon Dickerson and Ricky Johnson.
