As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marks one year in office today, May 29th, tensions arose between presidential spokespersons Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, and Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, regarding the President’s state of the nation address at the joint session of the National Assembly. This address was part of the 25th anniversary of Nigeria’s democratic journey.

Bayo Onanuga, in a post on X, announced that President Tinubu would address the National Assembly to mark the Democracy Day anniversary, citing information from the clerk of the National Assembly. However, Ajuri Ngelale refuted this claim, calling the information “false and unauthorized” and clarifying that the Office of the President was not involved in planning the event, leading to widespread criticism.

In a statement assessing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s first year in office, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar claimed that the nation’s economy has deteriorated since Tinubu assumed office. He criticized the President for implementing a mix of policies without concrete plans to achieve the promised economic remodeling.

Amid the economic challenges, the Senate on Tuesday passed a bill for the third reading to reintroduce the old national anthem, despite opposition from the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, who suggested that the process to change the anthem should undergo broader consultation.

The old national anthem, titled “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” was written by British expatriate Lillian Jean Williams in 1959 and was replaced by former Head of State, General Olusegun Obasanjo, in 1978. The National Assembly’s move to reintroduce the old anthem has sparked mixed reactions. While many lawmakers support the bill, Senator Adams Oshiomhole argued for the removal of the words “native” and “tribe” from the old anthem, and Deputy Senate President Baru Jubrin suggested changing “Motherland” to “Fatherland” to align with Nigerian tradition.
