Ambassador to Senegal** with accreditation to Mali, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Gambia, and Guinea (1989-1993).
Ambassador to Djibouti and Permanent Representative to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) (1993-2002).
Ambassador to France Permanent Representative to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and was accredited to Tunisia and Morocco (2002-2006).

Before becoming president, Sahle-Work had a prominent role within the United Nations. She served as:
Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi** (UNON), making her the first woman to hold that position.
Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to the African Union and Head of the UN Office to the African Union** at the rank of Under-Secretary-General.

As President
