The diplomatic conflict between Canada and India escalated dramatically following the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Khalistan separatist, in Canada in June 2023. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly accused the Indian government of being potentially involved in Nijjar’s murder, a claim that India vehemently denied, calling it absurd and politically motivated.

Tensions between the two countries had already been strained over Canada’s perceived tolerance of pro-Khalistan groups advocating for a separate Sikh state, which India considers extremist. After Trudeau’s allegations, relations deteriorated further, leading to a series of tit-for-tat diplomatic actions.

In October 2024, Canada expelled six Indian diplomats, claiming security concerns. India responded by expelling six Canadian diplomats, including Acting High Commissioner Stewart Wheeler, while also withdrawing its High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats from Canada, citing threats to their safety. India accused Canada of harboring extremists and terrorists who threaten Indian diplomats and community leaders, and further criticized Trudeau’s government for engaging in vote-bank politics by aligning with these groups.

India has repeatedly called out Canada for not providing concrete evidence to support Trudeau’s claims and suggested that the allegations were part of a deliberate attempt to smear India for political gain. Meanwhile, Canada insists it has credible evidence linking Indian agents to the killing and has called for India’s cooperation in the investigation.

The diplomatic rift reflects deeper issues, including Canada’s perceived failure to address the activities of pro-Khalistan elements and growing mistrust between the two governments. Both countries have taken a firm stand, with India reserving the right to take further actions, while Canada continues to press for accountability.
