Abdul El-Sayed has made history in Michigan’s 2026 U.S. Senate election, and his victory speech is drawing national attention.

After defeating Republican Mike Rogers, the Democratic senator-elect delivered a pointed message to President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, responding to attacks made against him during the campaign.

In one of the speech’s most memorable moments, El-Sayed addressed JD Vance and highlighted the irony that the vice president is constitutionally expected to swear him into office in January. He also told Trump that, after the swearing-in, he could simply call him “Senator.”

But El-Sayed’s message went beyond personal political exchanges. He criticised the influence of billionaires, corporations and special interests in American politics, arguing that ordinary people should have a stronger voice in government.

His campaign focused on reducing the cost of living, Medicare for All, putting money in people’s pockets and limiting corporate influence.
