Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis delivers a powerful and direct speech at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
In his address, Prime Minister Philip Davis strongly defended the sovereignty of small nations and warned against a world where powerful countries determine the choices of smaller states.
One of the most striking moments came when Davis declared:
We did not win our freedom to once again become somebody’s backyard.
He also said:
A sovereignty that must ask permission is not sovereignty. It is a lease.
The Bahamas Prime Minister called for a stronger rules-based international order, greater representation for small island states, reform of the UN Security Council, action on climate change and sea-level rise, and greater international attention to Haiti and Cuba.
Davis also announced that The Bahamas is seeking a seat on the UN Security Council for 2032–2033 and called for reforms that would give small island states a stronger voice in global decision-making.
